Njerinjil, also known as prickly-fruited beggarticks or Spanish needles, is a herbaceous plant that belongs to the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Its botanical name is Bidens pilosa and it is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
The plant grows up to 1 meter in height and has a slender stem with alternate, pinnate leaves that are toothed and hairy. The plant produces small yellow flowers that are about 1 cm in diameter and have 5-8 ray petals. The flowers are followed by small, barbed seeds that cling to clothing and animal fur, giving rise to the plant’s common name.
Njerinjil has been used for its medicinal properties in traditional medicine systems across its native range. The plant contains a number of phytochemicals, including flavonoids, terpenes, and alkaloids, which are believed to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-microbial properties. It has been used to treat a range of conditions, including fever, headache, skin infections, diarrhea, and respiratory problems.
In addition to its medicinal uses, njerinjil is also used in traditional cuisine. The young leaves and shoots can be cooked and eaten like spinach, while the seeds can be roasted and ground to make a coffee substitute. The plant is also used as fodder for livestock.
Despite its many uses, njerinjil is considered an invasive weed in many parts of the world, including Australia, where it has been introduced. Its ability to spread rapidly and outcompete native plants has led to its classification as a noxious weed in some areas.
