The Totapuri Mango, also known as the Bangalora Mango, is a popular mango variety grown in India. Here is a description of the Totapuri Mango plant:
1. Appearance: The Totapuri Mango tree is a large-sized evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 meters (100 feet) in height. It has a spreading canopy with dense foliage and large, dark green leaves. The trunk of the tree is sturdy and covered in rough, grayish-brown bark.
2. Fruits: The Totapuri Mango is named after its distinct beak-like shape. The mangoes are elongated and curved, with one pointed end resembling a parrot’s beak. The skin is thick and turns from green to yellow as the fruit ripens. The flesh is firm, fiberless, and pale yellow in color. It has a unique tangy and slightly sour taste, making it different from other sweet mango varieties.
3. Flavor and Aroma: The Totapuri Mango is known for its tangy and slightly acidic flavor. It has a unique combination of sweet and sour taste notes that make it refreshing and distinctive. The mangoes have a moderate aroma that complements their flavor profile.
4. Cultivation: The Totapuri Mango is widely cultivated in various regions of India, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. It thrives in hot tropical climates with high humidity. The tree requires well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight to produce quality mangoes.
5. Culinary Uses: The Totapuri Mango is a versatile mango variety used in both raw and ripe forms. It is popularly used for making mango-based dishes, beverages, and chutneys. The raw Totapuri Mango is often used in pickles, salads, and spicy preparations. When ripe, it is enjoyed fresh, sliced, and added to fruit salads or used in desserts like ice creams, sorbets, and smoothies.
6. Commercial Significance: The Totapuri Mango is highly valued in the commercial mango industry due to its distinct shape and unique flavor. It is widely used in the production of mango pulp, concentrates, and purees, which are utilized in the manufacturing of various mango-based products.
In summary, the Totapuri Mango is a well-known mango variety appreciated for its beak-like shape, tangy flavor, and culinary versatility.
