Kokum

Kokum (Garcinia indica) is a tropical evergreen tree that grows up to 30 feet in height. It is native to the western coast of India, and is also found in other parts of the country as well as in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. The tree has glossy, dark green leaves and small, yellow or white flowers. The fruit is a deep purple, berry-like drupe that is about the size of a small plum. It has a thick, fleshy rind and a sour, juicy pulp. The fruit is often used in Indian cuisine, particularly in the coastal regions, as a souring agent in curries and chutneys. The rind of the fruit is also used to make a popular drink called sol kadi, which is made by soaking the grated rind in water and then mixing it with coconut milk and spices. In addition to its culinary uses, kokum has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. The extract of kokum is also used as a natural remedy for various ailments such as stomach problems, skin conditions, and fever.
