Cereus repandus, commonly known as the Peruvian apple cactus or giant cactus, is a large, columnar cactus species that belongs to the Cactaceae family. It is native to South America, particularly in the Andes mountains, but is now widely cultivated in many other parts of the world.
The Peruvian apple cactus can grow up to 10 meters tall and 15-20 centimeters in diameter. It has a ribbed stem with sharp spines and small, hair-like structures known as glochids that can cause skin irritation. The stem is typically green in color but may turn brownish-red with age.
The Peruvian apple cactus produces large, white, nocturnal flowers that bloom during the summer months. The flowers are followed by oval-shaped fruit that is bright green when young and turns yellow when ripe. The fruit is edible and has a sweet, juicy flesh, which is why it is sometimes called the Peruvian apple.
The Peruvian apple cactus is a hardy plant that can tolerate a wide range of temperatures and soil conditions. It prefers full sun exposure and well-draining soil. It is also drought-tolerant and can survive long periods without water.
In addition to its ornamental value, the Peruvian apple cactus has several medicinal uses. Its fruit is rich in vitamin C and other nutrients and is sometimes used to treat digestive problems and to boost the immune system. The stem and fruit of the cactus also have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties and are sometimes used in traditional medicine to treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.
Overall, the Peruvian apple cactus is a unique and impressive plant species that can add a tropical feel to any garden or landscape. Its edible fruit and medicinal properties make it a valuable resource for both culinary and medicinal purposes
