Rotala ramosior ‘Florida’, often simply called Rotala Florida, is widely considered the “Crown Jewel” of the high-tech aquascaping world. A rare selection of a species native to North America, this plant is famous for its stunning, unique coloration that ranges from deep amethyst to bright purple, contrasting sharply against its green stems.

Botanical Characteristics

  • Growth Habit: An upright, relatively slow-growing stem plant. Unlike many other Rotala species that have thin, needle-like leaves, Rotala Florida features small, rounded, or ovate leaves.

  • Coloration: Under optimal conditions, the leaves turn a vibrant purple or magenta. It is one of the few aquatic plants that can maintain a true purple hue rather than just red or orange.

  • Leaf Structure: The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs along a thick, sturdy green stem. This rigidity makes it easier to plant and propagate compared to more delicate rotalas.

  • Size: Stems typically reach $10$ to $20$ cm in height in an aquarium, making it an ideal choice for the mid-ground or as a focal “accent” clump.

Environmental & Technical Requirements

Rotala Florida is a demanding plant. It is generally recommended for experienced hobbyists who use high-tech CO2-injected systems.

Factor Requirement
Light High Intensity. Strong lighting is mandatory to trigger and maintain the purple pigmentation.
CO2 High. Constant CO2 injection is necessary; without it, the plant grows very slowly and often stunts.
Water Hardness Soft to Medium. It thrives best in soft water ($GH$ 3–6) and slightly acidic $pH$ (6.0–6.8).
Temperature Prefers a stable range of 22°C to 28°C. It is sensitive to rapid temperature fluctuations.
Substrate Requires a nutrient-rich aquasoil. It draws a significant amount of nutrients through its root system.

The “Florida” vs. “Sunset” Comparison

In the trade, you may encounter Rotala ramosior ‘Sunset’. While related, they are distinct:

  • ‘Florida’: Displays a more consistent Purple/Violet leaf color with a green stem.

  • ‘Sunset’: Tends to show more Yellow, Orange, and Pink gradients (resembling a sunset).

Maintenance & Aquascaping Tips

  1. Nitrate Limitation: To achieve the deepest purples, many growers practice “Nitrate Limitation”—keeping water column Nitrates ($NO_3$) low while ensuring the roots are well-fed through the soil.

  2. Pruning: Because it is a slower grower, do not prune it as aggressively as Rotala rotundifolia. When the stems reach the desired height, “top” them and replant the cuttings. The bottom portion will eventually send out side shoots.

  3. Placement: Because of its intense color and vertical growth, it is best used as a focal point. Planting it in small, dense groups against a bright green background (like Hemianthus callitrichoides ‘Cuba’) makes the purple pop.

  4. Algae Control: Because it grows slowly, it is susceptible to GSA (Green Spot Algae) on its leaves. Maintaining stable CO2 and clean water is essential to keep the leaves pristine.

Commercial Value for Your Shop

For a botanical or aquarium shop, Rotala Florida is a “prestige” item. It appeals to:

  • Professional Aquascapers: Looking for rare colors for competition tanks.

  • Collectors: Hobbyists who enjoy “Rare Plant” challenges.

  • Tissue Culture Fans: It is often sold in TC cups to ensure it is free of pests, snails, and algae.
