Rotala ‘Pearl’ (often referred to as Rotala macrandra ‘Pearl’) is one of the smallest and most delicate cultivars in the Rotala genus. A mutation of the famous Rotala macrandra, ‘Pearl’ is a true “nano” plant, prized by aquascapers for its tiny, downward-curving leaves and unique architectural growth.

Botanical Characteristics

• Growth Habit: A strictly vertical stem plant with an extremely compact form. It is much smaller than the standard Rotala macrandra, with stems usually only $1$ to $2$ cm wide.

• Foliage: The leaves are minute, circular, and possess a distinct downward curl, giving the stem a “pearl-string” or beaded appearance.

• Coloration: Under high-performance conditions, the leaf undersides and tips turn a soft pink to deep magenta, while the tops stay a pale, translucent green or gold.

• Texture: The plant has a very “fragile” look. Because the leaves are so small, it creates a sense of immense scale in small nano tanks.

3. Water Column Dosing: It is highly responsive to Potassium ($K$) and Iron ($Fe$). If the leaves look pale or “whitish,” increase iron dosing; if holes appear in the tiny leaves, check for potassium deficiency.

4. Sensitivity: This plant is sensitive to Excel/Liquid Carbon (Glutaraldehyde) dosing. Use such products with caution as they can cause the delicate leaves to melt.
