Description

The Indian Beech Tree (Pongamia pinnata), also known locally as Pungai, Karanj, or Honge, is one of the most versatile and hardy trees native to the Indian subcontinent. It is a nitrogen-fixing leguminous tree belonging to the Fabaceae family, prized equally for its ecological benefits, medicinal properties, and its potential as a source of biofuel.

Botanical Characteristics

  • Growth Habit: A medium-sized, semi-evergreen tree that typically reaches $15$ to $20$ meters in height. It has a broad, spreading canopy that provides dense, cool shade.

  • Foliage: The leaves are pinnately compound, glossy, and a vibrant soft green when young, maturing into a deep, leathery emerald. They are highly resistant to salt spray, making them ideal for coastal areas.

  • Flowers: It produces attractive, pea-like blossoms in shades of white, pink, or lavender. These flowers are mildly fragrant and emerge in racemes during the onset of summer.

  • Fruit & Seeds: The fruit is a thick, woody, yellowish-gray pod, about $3$ to $5$ cm long. Each pod contains one or two oily, reddish-brown seeds.

Environmental & Growing Conditions

The Pungai tree is legendary for its ability to thrive where other trees struggle.

Factor Requirement
Climate Thrives in tropical and subtropical regions. It is exceptionally heat-tolerant.
Temperature Suited for regions with temperatures from 5°C up to 45°C. It handles the intense heat of Trichy (38°C–42°C) with ease.
Soil Highly adaptable. It grows in sandy, rocky, or even alkaline/saline soils. It can tolerate “wet feet” (seasonal waterlogging) and drought.
Sunlight Requires full sun to develop a strong trunk and a dense canopy.

Primary Uses & Benefits

1. Biofuel and Industrial Oil

The seeds contain approximately 30–40% oil (Karanja oil). While non-edible, this oil is a major source for:

  • Biodiesel: It is one of the primary species used in sustainable biofuel research.

  • Soap & Leather: Used in the tanning industry and for making medicated soaps.

2. Traditional Medicine (Siddha & Ayurveda)

  • Skin Health: Karanja oil is a potent antifungal and antibacterial agent, used to treat eczema, psoriasis, and skin ulcers.

  • Oral Care: In many rural areas, the small twigs are used as “chew sticks” (natural toothbrushes) to maintain gum health.

  • Wound Healing: A paste of the leaves is applied to wounds and inflammatory swellings to reduce pain and speed recovery.

3. Agriculture & Ecology

  • Natural Pesticide: Much like Neem, Pungai oil and “cake” (the residue after oil extraction) act as a powerful organic pesticide and fertilizer.

  • Nitrogen Fixation: Its roots host bacteria that convert atmospheric nitrogen into soil nutrients, improving the fertility of the surrounding land.

Maintenance & Cultivation Tips

  • Propagation: Most commonly grown from seeds. Fresh seeds germinate within $10$ to $20$ days. It can also be propagated via root suckers or stem cuttings.

  • Spacing: For avenue planting or boundaries, a spacing of $5$ to $8$ meters is recommended to allow the canopy to spread.

  • Watering: Young saplings require regular watering during their first two summers. Once established, the tree is remarkably drought-resistant.

  • Pruning: Low-hanging branches should be pruned early to encourage a tall, clear trunk if used as a street or shade tree.

Why Feature Pungai in Your Shop?

  • The “Green Alternative” to Neem: It offers similar pest-control benefits but is often faster-growing and more tolerant of poor soil.

  • Urban Favorite: It is the top choice for “Green City” initiatives because it filters air pollutants and thrives despite urban heat islands.

  • Low Maintenance: For customers looking for a “plant and forget” shade tree that also yields medicinal oil, the Indian Beech is unbeatable.
