Neomarica longifolia, also known as the “Walking Iris,” is a perennial plant native to Brazil and other parts of South America. It is a member of the Iris family and is grown for its attractive foliage and unique flowers.
The Walking Iris plant typically grows to be 1-2 feet tall and has long, thin leaves that can reach up to 2 feet in length. The leaves are dark green and have a glossy texture. The plant gets its common name from the way that new growth arises from the base of the plant, causing it to “walk” across the ground as it spreads.
The flowers of the Neomarica longifolia plant are unique and attractive, with white petals and a central blue or purple “crest.” The flowers are relatively large, measuring up to 4 inches across, and they bloom from spring to summer. Each flower lasts only a day or two, but the plant produces many flowers over a long period of time.
The Walking Iris plant is relatively easy to grow and prefers well-draining soil and partial shade or filtered sunlight. It benefits from regular watering and occasional fertilization during the growing season. The plant can also be propagated easily by dividing the rhizomes.
The Neomarica longifolia plant is often used in tropical or subtropical gardens and is also popular as a houseplant. It is often grown in containers or hanging baskets, where its trailing habit and attractive foliage make it an ideal choice. The Walking Iris plant is also commonly used in landscaping, as it is relatively low maintenance and adds a unique touch to any garden or landscape.
