Rotala mexicana ‘Goias’ is a unique and highly sought-after foreground plant in the aquascaping hobby. Unlike most Rotala species that grow vertically toward the water surface, ‘Goias’ is famous for its prostrate (creeping) growth habit, making it one of the few colored plants capable of forming a dense, carpet-like mat.

Originating from the Goiás region of Brazil, this plant adds a rare touch of pink and bronze to the bottom of the aquarium.

Botanical Characteristics

  • Growth Habit: It grows horizontally along the substrate. When provided with high light, the stems “hug” the soil, sending out lateral runners that eventually overlap to create a thick, textured carpet.

  • Foliage: The leaves are small, narrow, and curved. They are significantly smaller than those of Rotala rotundifolia.

  • Coloration: Under intense lighting, the new growth and leaf tips transition from a soft olive green to a beautiful vibrant pink, copper, or brownish-red.

  • Texture: Its creeping nature creates a “wild,” natural look that is perfect for Brazilian-style or Iwagumi aquascapes where a strictly green carpet might feel too uniform.

Technical Growing Requirements

Rotala mexicana ‘Goias’ is considered a medium-to-difficult plant. While it is hardy, achieving the creeping carpet effect requires specific environmental triggers.

Factor Requirement
Light High Intensity. This is non-negotiable for carpeting. Under low light, the plant will “reach” upward and lose its pink hue.
CO2 Mandatory. CO2 injection is essential to maintain the fast metabolism required for horizontal spreading.
Water Hardness Prefers Soft to Medium water ($GH$ 3–8). It is adaptable but grows most vibrantly in slightly acidic conditions ($pH$ 6.0–6.8).
Substrate Requires fine-grained nutrient-rich aquasoil. Because it creeps, it relies heavily on root-available nutrients like Iron and Potassium.
Temperature Stable range of 22°C to 28°C.

Maintenance & Aquascaping Tips

  1. Initial Planting: Plant the stems individually using fine tweezers, spaced about $1$ to $2$ cm apart. This allows light to reach the base and encourages the runners to fill in the gaps.

  2. Training the Carpet: If the stems start to grow vertically, you can gently “pin” them down or trim the vertical shoots to force the plant to focus its energy on lateral growth.

  3. Pruning: Once the carpet becomes too thick (over $3$ cm deep), the bottom layers may start to rot due to lack of light and water flow. At this stage, it is best to thin out the patch or perform a heavy “mow.”

  4. Iron Supplementation: To enhance the pink and bronze tones, regular dosing of chelated iron into the water column or via root tabs is highly effective.

Why Choose Rotala ‘Goias’ for Your Shop?

  • The “Colored Carpet” Appeal: Most carpet plants (HC Cuba, Monte Carlo, Glossostigma) are strictly green. ‘Goias’ offers a rare color alternative for the foreground.

  • Versatility: It can also be used as a “spill-over” plant on rockwork or driftwood, where the stems will gracefully hang downward.

  • High-End Demand: It is a staple in high-tech “Dutch” and “Nature Style” tanks, appealing to serious hobbyists looking for detailed textures.
